Tuning
Exact ignition timing is inevitable in every motor, but especially in modified motors.
A late ignition (less than 15 degrees) will rob power. Early ignition (more than 25 degrees) will most of the time cause a hole in the piston - especially in combination with a tuning exhaust (i.e. PM). The motor will overheat.
The use of Vespa PK or HP4 rotors is very critical. The have a second mortise that is off by a few degrees. We had customers that were driving around with 34 degrees early ignition. To correct this the stator has to me modified.
On ignitions with mechanical contacts the contact gap has to be controlled before adjusting the ignition timing. Changing the gap will change the ignition timing again!
We engrave permanent markings on the rotor and enginge housing. The ignition timing is then tested with a strobe light (see Onlineshop) and finally the timing is adjusted by rotating the stator to the correct position.
Here you can download a mpg file where you can see how a strobe light works. The ignition in the films is flashed on 18 degrees. It looks like the flywheel is standing still - but the motor is running !!! ==> Download the strobe film
